Martine Johanna is a Dutch born artist. Johanna has developed a unique, highly prismatic language channeling her authentic viewpoints and mental struggles with a patriarchal society, separating herself from the establishment. She currently lives and works in the Netherlands in the countryside, maintaining close ties to her former Amsterdam location where she worked and resided for 12 years. Each painting peeks into Johanna's private world, where she grapples with women's hypervisibility and invisibility. The figures look past the viewer as though our presence is inconsequential, and her haunting protagonists evoke a sense of mystery and strength.

"At the start of my career I only had one ultimate wish; when I would be ready I'd want to do a residency in New York. To feel the energy grounded in a rich past, the forward moving city, the ambitions, self expression and an incomparable current of a multitude of characters and cultures that move and unify the people of this city. To be part of that and be able to have that energy influence my work is something close to magic."
