Yam Shalev (b. 1996, Tel Aviv, Israel) is an artist based in Berlin, Germany. Shalev paints food and table still-lifes, exploring the intimate relationship with our contemporary culture around the table. People are usually kept out of his compositions so that the table settings become stand-ins for human participants and interactions; Shalev finds that it is the objects we use and the foods we eat that tell a more compelling story than figurative representation. Through recurring objects and places, his work takes an introspective look at celebratory, intimate, romantic, and vulnerable moments, defining an experience, a culture, and a group of people without including the participants. The paintings also translate a process of transformation and catharsis as the artist becomes increasingly self-reflective. Shalev has held solo exhibitions at Room57 Gallery, New York; Allouche Benias Gallery, Athens; Cuturi Gallery, Singapore; and Lorin Gallery, Los Angeles.
"I love responding to my surroundings with painting. It just feels natural and gives me the opportunity to react towards things that sometimes can't be putting into words. My paintings grow out of my observational personality: I regard myself more as an observer than a participant in the situations I find myself in. Through my paintings, I use this lens to analyze human behaviors, scenes, and interactions, learning about myself and my relationship through my surroundings."
